Southampton College Taster Session at Mayfield Park
At the end of March, our Club Captain Lyn was approached by Southampton College with a request to host a taster session in lawn bowls for a group of their students. As always, Mayfield Park rose to the occasion and warmly welcomed the youngsters, giving them the chance to try out our sport.
The students took to the green with enthusiasm, and it was wonderful to see how quickly they picked up the basics. With support and encouragement from several of our members—who helped return woods and jacks and offered helpful tips along the way—the session was a great success.
Even the college tutors joined in on the fun, needing little persuasion to give it a go! The atmosphere was relaxed and enjoyable, and the event highlighted how lawn bowls can bring people together across generations.
Afterwards, our guests stayed for squash and biscuits—which were thoroughly enjoyed! All in all, it was a fantastic day that showcased the spirit of community and our shared passion for the sport.
Big Bowls Day 24th May 2025
Bowls’ Big Weekend – A Great Success at Mayfield Park
Bowls’ Big Weekend is a nationwide event organised by Bowls England, designed to introduce more people to the sport. Held over the May Bank Holiday (23–26 May), clubs across the country opened their doors to the public, offering free taster sessions in a fun, welcoming, and inclusive environment. The initiative promotes bowls as a modern, accessible activity that brings communities together and encourages new members to get involved.
Mayfield Park held its event on Friday, 24th May, and we were thrilled to welcome over 30 visitors through our gates—25 of whom took part in a taster session. Thanks to the efforts of our wonderful members, who volunteered their time to demonstrate the basics and support our guests on the green, the day was both successful and enjoyable.
We’re especially pleased to share that at least five attendees have already expressed interest in further coaching with our club coach Lyn and are considering joining Mayfield Park—a fantastic outcome for the club.
We were also honoured by a visit from the Lord Mayor of Southampton, Councillor James Baillie, accompanied by his wife Becky and Councillor Sarah Powell-Vaughan. The Mayor couldn’t resist having a roll-up himself—and it turns out he’s no stranger to the game! Perhaps we’ll see him back on the green once his mayoral duties are complete.
It was particularly encouraging to see a number of young people taking part and enjoying the sport. We hope to see many of them back at Mayfield Park soon!
